Songfacts®:

  • On "People Like Us" Tim McGraw reflects on how we are all connected through universal life experiences despite our differences. It's an anthem of unity; a musical reminder that for all our differences we share the same basic human experiences: hopes, dreams, struggles, triumphs.
  • In promoting the song, McGraw expressed his hope that listeners will feel a sense of connection and be reminded of the beauty in our shared humanity. "Music has a way of touching our hearts and bringing us together," he said.
  • "People Like Us" follows in the footsteps of McGraw's previous society-minded tracks like "Undivided" and "Humble And Kind," which encourage us to do what we know we should be doing anyway - look beyond our differences, practice a little empathy, and find common ground.
  • The song was penned by Scooter Carusoe and Tom Douglas, the latter of whom had co-written several of McGraw's hits, including "Grown Men Don't Cry," and "Southern Voice." Carusoe is a bit more of a sporadic McGraw contributor, but he's teamed up with Douglas on other notable tracks like "Heart Of The World" for Lady Antebellum and Chris Janson's "Drunk Girl."
  • McGraw co-produced the track with his longtime collaborator Byron Gallimore. The two built the song's musical arrangement in a way that gently underscores its message. It starts simply, with a delicate piano line, and gradually builds, layering in steel guitar, strings, drums, and electric guitar and at the end, an orchestra.
  • Orchestrator David Campbell, the father of singer-songwriter Beck, arranged the strings.
