  • "Duvet" is a moody alternative rock track best known as the opening theme to the 1998 cult anime series Serial Experiments Lain. The song first appeared on Boa's 1998 debut album The Race of a Thousand Camels before getting a wider re-release on their 2001 album Twilight.
  • In 1996 Boa signed with the Japanese label Polystar (lead singer Jasmine Rodgers is half-Japanese), which put their music on the radar of the anime's production team. Series screenwriter Chiaki J. Konaka picked "Duvet" after reading a translation of Rodgers' lyrics and feeling they had a distinctly Japanese emotional core that fit the show's dark, melancholic world perfectly. Using an entirely English-language theme song was almost unheard of for an anime in the late '90s, making "Duvet" a rare bridge between a British indie band and Japanese cyberpunk animation.

"Lain was a happy coincidence," said Rodgers.

Unlike her later work on Armitage: Dual-Matrix, where she wrote music directly for the screen, "Duvet" was an existing Boa track that happened to work really well for the series.
  • The word "duvet" never appears in the lyrics. On its own, the track deals with the sting of a relationship turning sour and coming to terms with someone who isn't who they claimed to be. Paired with Serial Experiments Lain, the song takes on a deeper meaning, echoing main character Lain Iwakura's retreat into the digital world and her search for comfort as reality unravels around her. A duvet suggests warmth, shelter, and hiding away, the kind of refuge we crave when trust is broken.
  • Rodgers said the song was "about expectation and hope and maybe, at the time, about relying on other people." Writing it served as an emotional release: "I had a lot stewing in my mind and the words were coming out as poetry, and then I kind of worked them around and put them into this song."

The rest of Boa built the instrumentation, with keyboardist Paul Turrell playing a key role in shaping the arrangement.
  • "Duvet" blew up on TikTok over two decades later, introducing the band to a whole new generation of listeners. "We didn't expect it at all," Rodgers told Palatunate. "It was right at the end of the pandemic in 2021, and then it just started being mentioned and carried on."

"I'm really nosy, so I liked seeing people use the song in reels and stories," she continued. "You get to see how someone's brain is using that song as part of their memory. It's really beautiful."

The unexpected revival convinced Boa to end their long hiatus, culminating in Whiplash, their first new studio album in over two years, released in 2025.
  • Alex Parkinson directed the original 1998 music video, which shows the band performing on a rooftop along New Malden High Street in South London. Thanks to the track's ongoing streaming surge, the band released a second video for "Duvet" in 2023.
