Songfacts®:

  • "You're a Star" is a collaboration between Fred again and Australian punk band Amyl and the Sniffers. The drum n' bass-inflected song harnesses the group's energy and then explodes it with sirens and all-over-the-place vocal triggers.
  • According to Fred, the song captures the feeling of trying to claw "someone you love out of a hole... like in the midst of all kindsa chaos and misfortune and heaviness."

In other words, it's therapy at 160 BPM. He described it as being about helping someone see their own light again, or in his words, "you know they're a f---in starrrr, you just need to try and lift them up just enough to see the mirror for a second." It's a tender message, wrapped in distortion and musical adrenaline.
  • The song is a remix of Amyl and the Sniffers' 2024 track "Big Dreams." Amy Taylor wrote the song out of frustration and empathy, watching friends scrape by financially while still burning with creative fire. "When I think of my friends doing what they love," she said, "I just know they've never been dull, they've always been lit."
  • "You're a Star" folds in another layer: a sample from Becky And The Birds' 2025 song "Should've Known Better (Choices)." Becky And The Birds is the stage name of Swedish producer and singer Thea Gustafsson.
  • Released on October 3, 2025, the track continues Fred's USB saga, which began in 2022 as a series of unreleased tracks shared through physical USB drives. The original USB001 features collaborations with Skrillex, Baby Keem and Lil Yachty and was eventually pressed to vinyl in 2024. "You're a Star" was his first new release from USB002, with Fred releasing a new song and hosting a pop-up show from a different city every Friday for 10 weeks.
  • Fred premiered "You're a Star" live on September 27, 2025 in Sheffield, when he brought Amy Taylor on stage for a surprise appearance. He officially introduced the song at his USB002 Glasgow show a week later.
