Songfacts®:

  • Korn open their second album, Life Is Peachy, with this 49-second prelude. "Twist" is lead singer Jonathan Davis' feral scat singing alternated with the word "twist," framed by a very heavy groove. It lets the listener know what's in store for the rest of the album.
  • It's no good trying to understand what Davis is scat singing because it's gibberish. Asked by Rock N Roll Experience what he's saying, Davis replied: "Not a damn word. It's my crazy scatting style I guess."
  • When Davis' bandmates first heard the song, it blew their minds. "Once [Jonathan] did 'Twist,' it was, like, 'What in the hell was that?'" guitarist Brian Welch recalled on the Do You Know Jack? podcast. "And we were like, 'Let's open the record with that.' And people will be like, 'What? What is this? No one ever has done that.'"
  • The Life Is Peachy album closes with a version of "Twist" that is just Davis' isolated vocal, but you have to wait for it. After the last song, "Kill You," ends, there's a stretch of silence before the "Twist" reprise comes on. It was a fun trick in the '90s to include these surprise songs at the end of CDs. You would think the CD was over and would be on to something else - maybe a phone call or watching an episode of Seinfeld - when suddenly more (often very loud) music would blast from the stereo system. Korn put a hidden track on their self-titled debut album as well, including a recording of a random conversation minutes after the last track, "Daddy," comes to an end.
  • In 2022, "Twist" became an unexpected hit on TikTok in a video where an unseen person in a cornfield says "Oh my god, it's corn," then does the scat from this song. "It's the best impression I've heard in 30 years," Korn guitarist James Shaffer laughed to Spin.
