Songfacts®:

  • It seems Nicki Minaj finds only wealthy men attractive, and being well-off is a prerequisite to her having a sexual relationship. Here, she warns off anyone whom is not sufficiently moneyed that seeks to woo her.

    It ain't such a thing
    As broke and handsome

Since becoming a successful artist, Nicki has had her fair share of wealthy partners, including fellow rappers Meek Mill and Nas.
  • Lil Wayne jumps on the second verse contributing his own money-filled rhymes, full of his usual dirty talk. Nicki previously collaborated with her New Orleans rapper pal on her 2017 tracks "No Frauds" and "Changed It."
  • The tinkering piano production is courtesy of Aubry "Big Juice" Delaine and J. Reid, the latter of whom also supplied the beat for Minaj's two previous singles "Chun-Li" and "Barbie Tingz."
  • In January 2021 Jawara Headley, who goes by the rap name Brinx Billions, filed a suit against Nicki Minaj, claiming the song is a rip-off of a track he once played for her. In legal papers obtained by TMZ, Headley said he should be credited as "the sole author/creator/composer/writer/producer" of the song.

The Queens, New York rapper alleges that he and Minaj met via MySpace in 2007. They remained friends and when he played his version of "Rich Sex" to her prior to 2016, she told him "it would be extremely marketable and become a global hit."

According to Headley, Minaj's "Rich Sex" version has "similar music, musical notes, musical arrangement, musical beats and musical rhythm" to his. He believes Minaj stole the song for her Queen album, and as proof of the "Super Bass" star's alleged theft, the lawsuit highlights specific lyrics, including "it ain't such a thing as broke and handsome" from the song's chorus. Headley is suing Nicki, Cash Money, Young Money, and Universal Music Group for over $200 million in damages.
