Peso Pluma (real name Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija) hails from the outskirts of Guadalajara, Mexico. His music blends diverse cultural influences, incorporating rap into corridos. "There's corridos in which you'll hear me rap," Peso told Billboard. "My music is inspired by many cultures, and that's what I love about it."
"Peso Pluma" literally translates to "Featherweight" in English. The singer/rapper was known for being particularly thin during his earlier days, and he adopted his name after a conversation with boxer Marco Antonio Barrera. The Mexican fighter held titles in multiple weight classes, including featherweight and super featherweight.
During his childhood, Peso's exposure to various cultures and cities, including time spent in New York and San Antonio, greatly influenced his musical style. He became bilingual, crediting Kanye West, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar for helping him learn English by studying their lyrics after school. During a visit to New Orleans, he fell in love with jazz and the trombone, which became a key element in his music. Peso also learned to play guitar through YouTube tutorials.
Peso's dynamic live performances, characterized by high energy, dancing, and jumping, caught the attention of Mexican American executive George Prajin. Signing with Prajin Records in 2022 marked a turning point for him starting with "El Belicón" in collaboration with Raúl Vega, which became his first entry in the US Hot Latin Songs chart.
In 2023 Peso expanded his collaborations beyond his genre, working with artists like Colombian singer Karol G, Argentine rapper Nicki Nicole, Mexican reggaetón artist Yng Lvcas, Argentine producer Bizarrap and American singer Becky G, aiming for global appeal. His collaboration with Eslabon Armado on "Ella Baila Sola" further solidified his position as a rising star when it peaked at #4 on the Hot 100. Peso Pluma notched 23 entries on the Hot 100 in 2023.
His distinctive haircut, a unique mullet with a sideburn fade, trended in 2023 with barbers receiving numerous requests for "the Peso Pluma haircut." The story behind it involves a trip to Medellín where a local barber convinced him to try a popular style. Peso didn't like his mullet at first but later embraced his hairdo after seeing it in a music video.
He's also known as "The Double P" ("La Doble P"). When he started a record label in 2023, he named it Double P Records.
Peso Pluma had more YouTube views in 2023 than any other artist, about 8.5 billion.
He's a big boxing fan, as evidenced by his stage name, which came from that world. In 2023 he performed inside a ring for a video shown at the Billboard Music Awards, and in 2024 he released a song called "Gervonta" that's named after the boxer Gervonta "Tank" Davis.
